So, you’ve brought home your little bundle of fur from the breeder or rescue center, and you’re getting them settled in when you suddenly realize that you don’t know all that much about their feeding habits. So how many times a day should I feed my dog? It’s a common question, and one you need to ensure that you know the answer to so that your doggy remains healthy. Obesity in dogs is common, and many people feed their dogs as soon as the bowl is empty, which can cause problems.

Feeding Habits For Puppies

Up until four months of age, the best idea is to feed puppies a small amount 4-5 times a day. Make sure you feed your dog with puppy food, as it has the required nutrients to promote a healthy dog.

Between four to six months, reduce their meals to 3 times a day.  This should constitute a good dog diet. Make sure the food you choose states that a slice of meat is the first ingredient.

If your dog is between 3-6 months and is leaving food in the bowl, then do not fret. Puppies usually are teething around this age and may become a bit picky with their food. You must keep an eye on this though, and if your dog seems to be leaving his food for days at a time, take him to the vet.

Feeding Habits For Adult Dogs

After 6 months and onward, reduce your puppy’s meals to twice a day. They will then remain on two meals a day for the remainder of their life. You should stick with the puppy food until your dog is between 12 – 18 months old.

Between six months and a year, your puppy is still growing, and will still need feeding twice a day. Exercise is important to make sure you maintain your healthy dog, as this is the point where obesity in dogs becomes more apparent. Many people over-feed their pups at this stage because they have lost some of that “puppy energy”, and sometimes can seem lethargic. It might be a good idea to consult with your vet to make sure your dog is at a healthy weight.

After a year, whether you have been advised to feed your dog adult dog food or not, it is a good idea to ask your vet to check out your dog’s weight again, just to make sure that you’re on the right track. Many people, once the dog is past the puppy stage, tend to feed their dog some food from their plate. However, this is not a good idea, as it can promote obesity in dogs. If you wish to give your dog a treat, it’s worth looking at the various nutritious snacks available for dogs. You should use these when training your dog to sit, roll over and stay.

Hopefully, this will answer the question” How many times a day should I feed my dog”. Remember, if you are ever concerned about your dog’s weight, always consult your vet. This will ensure that you have a happy, healthy dog.
